Sufi Islam vs Wahhabi Islam
I recently started a petition. This petition is being made to address the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The contents of the petition include a demand from the government to ban the Wahhabi sect.
I vaguely remember, when I came to live in the United Kingdom almost 24 years ago, that there was a group called Al-Khilafah. Al-Khilafah projected the same ideology and doctrine of hatred [that Daesh project]; the British government then banned the group. I vaguely have this in my memory that the notorious Anjem Chaudhry was a member of that organisation. They were spreading their hateful doctrine in the UK; their head was Dr. Israr Ahmed. He ran this organisation from three different countries: Pakistan, the UK (London) and USA (Chicago), simultaneously. He would travel between Pakistan, the UK and USA very frequently.
In 1993, the situation was not that bad; however the British authorities foresaw the potential danger and they banned the group.
It is sad news, but 62% of Muslims who live in the UK are Wahhabis. My heart doesn’t allow me to accept that an individual is Wahhabi and he is not radicalised. They may appear to be peaceful citizens who have not shown any tendency to be prone to radicalisation; however, it is not just possible that an individual who practises the Wahhabi school of thought escapes radicalisation.
It is difficult for any other brand of Islam [besides Wahhabism] to be easily radicalised because the principles of mainstream Islam are not compatible with the doctrine of fanaticism and extremism.
This is especially true in the case of the Sufi brand of Islam, which of course is the gist of the Quran and Prophetic Traditions. Sufi Islam is the best and most original brand of Islam.
The principles of Sufi Islam are based upon compassion, tolerance, love and self-negation.
You will notice [one thing about] individuals who have been radicalised, who are blowing themselves up and taking lives of innocent people: their characters are strange. They are self-centred, selfish and their hearts are filled with an enormous amounts of lust and desires. They are egoistic and think highly of themselves.
One thing is very prominent in the Wahhabi doctrine, which is that any individual who practises the Wahhabi school of thought is very arrogant.
He thinks he is a breed apart, the best creation on Earth and everybody else is nothing in front of him.
On contrary to this intolerant doctrine of hatred and death is Sufi Islam, the principles of which begin with self-denial, self-negation, extending the comfort that you deserve to others and making sacrifices. If you find a poor man who is looking for food, a Sufi Muslim will take his food and feed the other. In order to receive help from a Sufi Muslim, you do not necessarily have to be a Muslim; you may be a Christian, Jew, Sikh or Hindu or maybe an atheist who doesn’t believe in God.
The doctrine which is given to a Sufi Muslim is so broadened and beautiful that they are only concerned about their good actions, not about who you are. They will help you and feel your pain.
In the doctrine of the Wahhabi school of thought, there is no concept of self-denial, self-negation or self realisation.
A Hadith-e-Qudsi is a type of knowledge given to the Prophet [Mohammad] directly from God; it is not part of the revelation (Wahi-e-Ilahi) and therefore this knowledge is an exclusive conversation between the Prophet and God.
According to a Hadith-e-Qudsi, ‘When God decides to improve your personal, spiritual welfare and wants to help you improve your ethical, spiritual character, he manifests upon you the flaws of your character.’
When this initiative is taken by God with an individual (who is a Sufi), this is the point where they start to learn self-denial and self-negation.
When Mecca was conquered and the Holy Wars came to an end, the Prophet of Islam was the head of the newly established Islamic State of the land of Hijaz. After the conquest of Mecca, Islam was the religion of the land. Most of those who opposed Islam had been killed; those who survived became a minority group under the protection of Sharia Law. So there was no enemy. However, the Companions of the Prophet who had seen so many wars in a series and had been fighting in wars along with Prophet Mohammad in the battlefield, after the conquest of Mecca, they were bored and asked the Prophet, ‘O Messenger of God, what of Jihad now?’
The Prophet replied, ‘My companions, let’s go now towards a greater Jihad.’ The Companions of the Prophet were really surprised and they said, ‘A greater Jihad, what is that?’
The Prophet of Islam said, ‘What you have fought against your enemy previously, your enemy was visible and you were able to kill them. You were able to punish them, so it was a relatively lesser Jihad. But now, I turn you towards a greater Jihad in which you cannot see your enemy.’
The Companions were really surprised. The Prophet said, ‘Now, you will wage a war against the enemy within yourself,’ the enemy that resides within you and you are not aware of its evil. This Jihad was declared as Jihad bin Nafs (struggle with your Self/Ego); the lesser Jihad in which the enemy was visible was called Jihad bil Saif (struggle with the sword).
Before the conquest of Mecca, the Prophet of Islam had been busy with so many things. For example, he started giving the message of God to people and they were converting to the new religion. As the process of promulgation of Islam started, some people came into the fold of Islam and others who opposed it became enemies. This was the time when Prophet Mohammad was busy with sorting out problems; at one point when he realised it was not feasible for him, his followers and the newly established religion of Islam to stay in Mecca any further, he decided to migrate (from Mecca, where he was born) to another neighbouring city. He migrated from Mecca to Yathrab (this is the real name of the city now called Medina); the Companions decided to call it Medina tul Nabi, ‘The City of the Prophet’. In Yathrab, he found help from the tribe of Banu Fajaar; there, Muslims started to gather their strength.
Finally, when the conquest of Mecca occurred and an Islamic State was established, the Prophet had time so he began to talk about the spiritual knowledge.
Before this point in time, he did not find enough time to explain what the true message of Islam is, which was to negate yourself, learn self-denial, purgate your soul and enlighten your soul.
This was the principle message of Islam. The prerequisite to becoming Momin (a true believer) was affirmation [of the faith] by your tongue and the verification of what you said must settle in your heart. The Quran is in complete agreement to this first principle of the Islamic faith when God said to Prophet Mohammad,
‘These Arabs say they are Momin (true believers). Tell them: you are not Momin, but you must say you have accepted Islam and have become Muslims until the faith has settled in your hearts.’
This is what you do to become a Muslim.
However, in this doctrine of hatred and death by Wahhabis, they are converting people, not into Islam, but into murder, barbarism and terrorism. They are terror-converts, not Muslim converts.
In Sufi Islam, you are a Mujahid, but a greater Mujahid.
The Jihad against your own self is obligatory upon every single Muslim – Jihad against the evil in you. This type of Jihad starts with self-denial and self-negation.
On contrary to this Quranic concept of Jihad, what we see in Muslims today is that they are egoistic. They don’t know anything about Islam. Those who are engaged in self-denial and observe self-negation, they crush their Ego and they do not take pride in being who they are. To them, all human beings on Earth are creation of God.
A Sufi Muslim is taught to respect everybody, because you do not know who from among human beings is closer in proximity to God.
You cannot judge anybody by looking at their face whether or not they love God. You do not love God with the length of your beard or by circumcising yourself; this is not a sign of a true Muslim. A true Muslim is one whose heart is enlightened; who has gone through the process of self-denial and self-negation. Only after this process is complete do you learn to respect humanity. The you do not observe arrogance and you are not deceitful. You become humble, meek and friendly with people.
When you see the enemy in you, then you don’t see the enemy within anyone else.
This Jihad is only performed by a real man. This Jihad is very difficult and it is not for those who are under the influence of drugs and lust. If you call the so-called Islamic State as an Islamic community, note that this community wants to exercise a free-sex society.
There is no evidence in Prophetic Traditions whereby Prophet Mohammad allowed the Companions to enter into free sex just because they were waging war with the enemies. But as we see today, the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia demanded from the Saudi government to send all female prisoners from jail to Syria to enter into free sex with the Mujahideen (fighters) of ISIS. He says that if these women do that, they would be doing a great favour upon themselves and they would enter heaven. This is ridiculous! This is like making a mockery out of the religion of Islam. There is no such thing in Islam as this, but Arabic society has always been improvising and modifying the text of God. They have always been modifying the words of Prophet Mohammad and have always been modifying within the Sharia Law.
In the Arab World, for the past 40-50 years, a girlfriend and boyfriend meet together and want to have sex. So they instantly say the Kalima three times (declaring their faith as part of marriage vows). They say, ‘I accept you, you accept me.’ This is called Nikah Urfi; for 30 minutes, they are husband and wife. By this token he or she can do it with anybody. Is this Islam? This is something which lustful minds have concocted by themselves in order to facilitate themselves in acquisition of their lustful desires.
What is happening in Syria is all about power, money, women and lust. You do not see a glimpse of Islam in their character.
They don’t even know what the Quran is and what it says. They don’t even know the character of Prophet Mohammad and that he was sent as mercy for the entire humankind. They claim to be Muslims but they are ruthless and show no mercy to anybody while the Prophet, the religion of whose they are supposedly practising, was sent as mercy to the entire humankind.
وَمَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَـٰكَ إِلَّا رَحۡمَةً۬ لِّلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ
‘Prophet Mohammad, have I not sent you but as mercy to the entire humankind?’
Regarding Prophet Mohammad’s character, the Quran also said,
وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ۬
‘O’ Messenger of God, I have appointed you upon the best of ethical character.’
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is a rapist and murderer. [Daesh] are not even human beings. They are enemies of Islam and humanity. They are enemies of Prophet Mohammad and God. There is nothing holy in them for except the name of God that they carry on their flag. Since I have seen the Kalima (Declaration of Faith) on their flag, I have developed some kind of hesitation to look at the Kalima just because they have it on their flag. Otherwise, there is nothing wrong with the name of God or that of Prophet Mohammad.
His Divine Eminence Imam Mehdi Gohar Shahi had already announced about seven years ago that there were two forms of Jihad: Jihad-e-Asghar and Jihad-e-Akbar. Jihad-e-Asghar is for self-defence, to defend your religion. But the religion of Islam is not under attack! The hierarchy of Islam is absent and the orders of Jihad-e-Asghar must come from the hierarchy of the religion. There are 73 sects and there is not one leader in the entire Muslim community to whom all the factions within Islam adhere to, listen to or obey.
Therefore, the smaller form of Jihad, which is Jihad with the Sword, has been abrogated, abolished, terminated – this is the decree of Imam Mehdi Gohar Shahi. The only form of Jihad which still is in practice is Jihad al Akbar: struggle against your Self, which of course is purification of the Self (Tazkiya tun Nafs). It is self-denial and self-negation. This is the greatest Jihad and this is what the world needs today.
Purify yourself and purify your thoughts. Purify your character, ego and heart. People need purification; they have accumulated a lot of filth in their brains and hearts; they have accumulated a lot of misunderstanding about the message of God. The principles of Islam and lust, hunger for power and hunger for money have all become entwined and polluted; confusion is making them even worse.
You need to purgate yourself. There is only brand of Jihad still in practice and that Jihad is to struggle against your own evil that resides in you. This is Sufi Islam.
Some orientalists say, on behalf of the Wahhabi sect, that Sufi Islam is not part of Islam and Sufi Islam is not derived from Quran – this is a wrong conception. The Quran says:
قَدۡ أَفۡلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ
‘Surely successful are those who have purified their Nafs (Self/Ego).’
The Quran also said:
وَفِىٓ أَنفُسِكُمۡۚ أَفَلَا تُبۡصِرُونَ
‘I [God] am hiding behind the veils of your Nafs, why don’t you peep into yourself?’
The power to see within yourself will come when the eye of your heart will be opened. In order to open the eyes of your heart, you need enlightenment and purification. Sufi Islam is the only true form of Islam. I invite those who have any doubts to study the Quran and Prophetic Traditions.
